Angle of light, Wynn Bullock

I talk about this photograph in class constantly, when discussing angle of light. Bullock presented it like this:

The "normal" view of it is this:

Your eye, and mind, wants light to come from the top of the frame- you will perceive depth based on that assumption, and, well, force an image to fit. In the first example you perceive what are really puddles as little raised "mesas" of water, because that's the perception that makes sense assuming the light is coming from the top. It's easier to "see" the depth reversed, than to "see" the light coming from the bottom.

This photograph is reproduced from "Wynn Bullock, Photography: A Way of Life". It is called "Point Lobos, 1972".

Just when I'm trying to be the greatest living writer in Photography, I get this:

"So the whole reason I have been trying to get to your page is because, I haven't told you lately that I love your work. And I need to tell you today... you are... my favorite living photographer."

(a truly lovely way to start a Friday. ...thanks 'shella!)

post- No, You're Not Entitled To Anything

"As my mother used to say, there are no guarantees in life, except death and taxes .A subset of those non-guarantees, is "nobody owes you anything, and you're not entitled to anything either."

Generally speaking, I think the last generation that thought they had to actually earn something is generation X. Generation Y, The millennials, and the youth of today, believe that everybody should get a ribbon, there are no winners and no losers, and you're owed a job once you graduate.

There are a few universal truths, so let's enumerate a few:

1) There will always be winners and losers. Period

2) Graduation from school prooves one thing - you can finish something you started. Beyond that, you'll have to demonstrate hard work, commitment, and a willingness to pay your dues.

(Continued after the Jump)"

LOVE this, but I'm cranky and hot today. Happy Friday.

color perception and context... (AKA optical illusions)

I've talked about this in class, and this is simply the coolest example of it I've ever seen. The punch line is that the green color and the blue color are actually the same. Don't believe it? Open it in Photoshop and read it, using "Info", or just use DigitalColor Meter on your Mac.

The site it came from is pretty cool, too, Color Illusion 12, here.
